REFLECTIONS ON INSTITUTIONAL TRAUMA

The chapter called MOVING THE MUSEUM was written about the Boston Children’s Museum move in 1979.  It became part of the publication that I edited called INSTITUTIONAL TRAUMA: The Effect of Major Change on Museum Staff published by AAM in 1995.  Between 1979 and 1995 the paper was an underground best seller passed from institution to instituion as they planned expansion.

However it is the Introductory Chapter of the book is more general and more useful and therefore uploaded here. It is useful because it makes the point that Administrators have a responsibility for their staff’s well being and that major change has a predictable pattern and leaders must pay attention to these.

I believe this chapter and indeed the book remains useful to staff undergoing change.
